Squirrel Treefrog (Hyla squirella)

  • Description: 3/4-1 1/2 inches; green to brown, usually with a few, small dark flecks or spots; often with indistinct light stripes along sides; rear of thighs unmarked.

  • Distribution: Southern half of state; relatively common.

  • Breeding period: April to August, usually following rains.

  • Breeding sites: Roadside ditches, rainpools, semi-permanent ponds.

  • Voice: Continuously repeated "waack" with a pronounced nasal quality.

  • Comments: Gray and pinewoods treefrogs calling in background. Recorded near Airey in Harrison County.
