Gulf coast toad (Bufo valliceps)

  • Description: 2-5 inches, prominent ridges on head; black to yellow-brown with lighter spots and highlights; broad, dark lateral stripes bordered above by light bands.

  • Distribution: Pearl River Valley north to at least Marion County, east along Gulf Coast to near Bay St. Louis.

  • Breeding period: March to September.

  • Breeding sites: Roadside ditches, ponds, lakes.

  • Voice: Trill, slower and lower in pitch than southern toad.

  • Comments: Individual with others calling faintly in background. Recorded near Lakeshore in Hancock County.
